How fitted hat sizes work
US fitted hat sizes are based on the diameter of a circle with the same circumference as your head: hat size ≈ head circumference in inches ÷ π (3.14). A 22¾ inch head gives 22.75 ÷ 3.14 = 7.24, which rounds to size 7¼. Sizes go up in eighths of an inch, and each eighth adds about ⅜ inch (1 cm) of circumference. That is why a single size step makes a noticeable difference in how a fitted cap feels.

Letter sizes (S, M, L, XL) are used for stretch-fit and adjustable styles and vary between brands; the numbered sizes are more consistent. UK hat sizes are usually one eighth smaller than US sizes for the same head — a US 7¼ is roughly a UK 7⅛.
How to measure your head
- Use a soft tape measure, or a piece of string and a ruler.
- Wrap it around your head where a cap sits: about ⅛ inch (3 mm) above the eyebrows and ears, around the widest part at the back.
- Keep the tape level and snug but not tight.
- Read the measurement where the tape meets, in centimetres or inches.
- Measure two or three times and use the largest reading.
If you are between sizes, choose the larger size for comfort or if you have thick hair; choose the smaller size for a secure fit in wind or during sport. Many people find the paid pack’s printable measuring tape useful if they do not own a soft tape.
Fitted, stretch-fit and adjustable caps
| Type | How it fits | Sizing |
|---|---|---|
| Fitted | Closed back, exact size | Numbered sizes such as 7⅛, 7¼ |
| Stretch-fit | Elastic band in the sweatband | Ranges such as S/M, M/L, L/XL |
| Snapback / strapback | Adjustable closure | One size fits most, roughly 21–24 inches |
| Youth caps | Smaller crown | About 6½–7 or youth one-size |
Check each brand’s size chart: a stretch-fit M/L from one brand may cover a different range from another.
Worked example
A head measuring 57.5 cm is 22.64 inches. Dividing by π gives 7.21, so the fitted size is 7¼ (58 cm). In letter sizing that is usually a large, and in UK sizing about 7⅛. If the cap is a structured wool fitted cap, the person might choose 7¼; for a softer cap they wear in hot weather, 7⅜ could feel more relaxed. For a stretch-fit style, they would pick L/XL or M/L depending on the brand’s range.
Getting the right fit
- A fitted cap should sit snugly without leaving a red mark on your forehead after an hour.
- New caps can feel tight and may stretch slightly with wear; wool stretches more than polyester.
- Caps that are too big slide down over the eyes or blow off; a thin sizing tape inside the sweatband can take up a little extra room.
- Hair length and style change the fit — measure with your usual hairstyle.
- Children’s heads grow quickly; measure again before each purchase.
Measuring children and between-size heads
Children’s heads grow fastest in the first years; a toddler may go up a size within months. Measure before every purchase and allow a little room, but avoid caps so big that they cover the eyes. For adults who measure between two sizes, try both if you can: brands differ in crown depth and sweatband thickness, and a size that fits one brand perfectly may be tight in another. When buying online, check the brand’s own chart in centimetres rather than relying on the size number alone.
Caring for caps
Spot-clean fitted caps with mild soap and cool water, and let them air-dry on a form or a rolled towel to keep the shape. Avoid hot washes and dryers, which can shrink wool and warp brims. Store caps where the crown will not be crushed.
